From the Ice to the Edit: Telling the Story of Kasey Morgan’s First Sturgeon Harvest
There is nothing quite like the frozen expanse of Lake Winnebago in February. For most, it’s a vast white desert; for the "sturgeon addicts" of Wisconsin and beyond, it’s the stage for one of the most unique traditions in the sporting world.
This past season, Kasey Morgan—owner of DeerFest and co-host of Huntworx—traded the woods for hard water. While Kasey is no stranger to the outdoors, he quickly realized that sturgeon spearing is a league of its own.
Learning from the Legends: The Muche Clan
Kasey didn't just head out onto the ice alone; he was invited into the inner circle of the Muche family. When it comes to sturgeon spearing, "expert" is an understatement. The Muches live and breathe this season, carrying decades of tribal knowledge passed down through generations.
Kasey described the experience as "drinking through a fire hose." In just over a week, the Muches attempted to download a lifetime of scouting, shack-cutting, and spearing strategy into his brain. The intensity paid off.
February 20, 2025: The Moment of Impact
The culmination of that mentorship happened on February 20, 2025. After days of staring into the glowing green depths of the "glory hole," the shadow appeared. With the Muche family cheering him on, Kasey successfully speared his very first Lake Winnebago sturgeon.
"From that moment till now, I've been totally hooked and just infatuated with trying to learn more... I haven't stopped thinking about this stuff since I got to be a part of it." — Kasey Morgan
Bringing the Story to Life: The Edit
Capturing the raw energy of a sturgeon shack is one thing; turning hours of footage into a compelling narrative is another. Kasey captured some truly incredible content on the ice, but he needed a master touch to bring the story to the screen.
He reached out to our very own Jared Petrie to take the lead on the post-production. Jared found a brilliant way to slice through the individual shots, weaving together the quiet anticipation of the shack with the high-octane adrenaline of the strike. The result is a cinematic look at a Wisconsin tradition that most people never get to see from the inside.
What’s Next?
With the new season kicking off this Saturday, Kasey is officially a "sturgeon addict," already texting the Muches about scouting and ice conditions. The fever is real, and the Winnebago system is calling.
